biography
Athletic career
Janne Lahtela comes from Kemijärvi and is a member of the Avalanche Ski Club. According to his own statements, he felt a strong urge to move around as a child and later suspected it was an undiagnosed ADHD disorder .
Lahtela took part in the International Youth Championships near his home town for the first time in March 1987 and was eleven in the Moguls, three years later he won the competition on Pyhätunturi at the age of 16. On December 6, 1990, he made his debut in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup in Tignes . With three top 10 results, he qualified for the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville , where he finished 18th before his 18th birthday. At his first world championship in Altenmarkt he finished eleventh, at the Olympic Games in Lillehammer he was ninth. Due to a serious knee injury, he missed much of the 1994/95 season and the entire 1995/96 season.
With two top 10 placements in the new parallel discipline Dual Moguls, he qualified for the World Championship in Nagano . His results remained inconspicuous, but he was also able to qualify for the 1998 Olympic Games , where he surprisingly won the silver medal behind Jonny Moseley and led a strong Finnish team. From then on, his performance improved and he was able to celebrate his first World Cup victory in Blackcomb in January 1999 at the age of 24. With two more victories, he won the Moguls discipline for the first time at the end of the season. In addition, he was crowned Moguls World Champion and dual Moguls Vice World Champion in Hasliberg .
In his strongest season in 1999/00 , he secured seven wins in both the overall freestyle World Cup and both disciplines. In the coming winters he struggled with knee problems again and had to undergo an operation in 2001. After convalescence, he celebrated his greatest career success in February 2002 at the Olympic Games in Deer Valley , when he was crowned Olympic champion. He then won the World Cup discipline rankings in Dual Moguls ( 2002/03 ) and Moguls ( 2003/04 ). In a serious fall in Canada, he suffered a back injury and a hematoma in 2005 , but continued his career with a view to the home World Cup in Ruka and the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin . There he was again considered a promising medal candidate, but ultimately had to be content with rank 16.
In March 2006 he ended his career in the World Cup after a total of 15 winters.
Further career
After his active career, Janne Lahtela took over the post as head coach of the Japanese national team in 2006. He made this decision because he had already worked with Japanese sponsors during his playing days. Until 2014 he looked after successful athletes such as Nobuyuki Nishi , Aiko Uemura and Miki Itō as well as the later double world champion Ikuma Horishima . In March 2011, as a result of the Fukushima nuclear disaster , he had to relocate to Hakuba, only 60 km away . After finishing his coaching activity in Japan, Lahtela took a break from skiing. While he was training for the Senior World Championships in weightlifting , he suffered a spine injury in a motocross accident in summer 2014. In the spring of 2015 he was hired as the head coach of the Finnish national team.
Lahtela is considered a difficult character, which he demonstrated, for example, in the unfriendly dealings with Japanese journalists. He lives with his dog in Katajanokka , a district of Helsinki .
