Alexandre Bilodeau (born September 8, 1987 in Montreal ) is a former Canadian freestyle skier . He specialized in the disciplines of moguls and dual moguls ( moguls ) and is one of the world's most successful athletes. In both 2010 and 2014 he won the gold medal in the Moguls discipline at the Winter Olympics, three times in a row he was dual-Moguls world champion. In addition, he won the Moguls discipline ranking and the overall ranking in the 2008/09 season as well as two further World Cup medals.

Career

Bilodeau was also an excellent aerials jumper in his youth. As a 14-year-old, he was the youngest athlete ever to do a triple somersault . After joining the Canadian junior squad in 2004, he focused on the Mughal disciplines. In 2005 he was the first mogul skier ever to show a double screw in a competition .

On December 14, 2005, Bilodeau took part in the World Cup for the first time in Tignes and was immediately eleventh. During its inaugural 2005/06 season, he won twice, making it the youngest ever Mogul World Cup winner. At the 2006 Winter Olympics , however, he could not live up to his role as a favorite and came in 11th place. In the following season 2006/07 he won no competition, but reached a podium four times. The 2007/08 season was exactly the same.

The 2008/09 season dominated Bilodeau almost at will. With five World Cup victories (including four in a row in February 2009) and three second places, he superiorly secured both the discipline ranking and the overall ranking. In addition, he won the gold medal in the dual moguls discipline at the 2009 World Cup in Inawashiro . After he stood on the podium three times in the 2009/10 season, he was able to win the gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics and leave favored Australian Dale Begg-Smith behind. It was the first time a Canadian had won an Olympic Games in their own country.

In the 2010/11 season, Bilodeau won four competitions and was second twice and third once. At the 2011 World Championships in Deer Valley , he defended his world title in the Dual Moguls, and he also won the silver medal in the Moguls competition. Due to an injury he was only able to start the 2011/12 season late, but still achieved a podium. In winter 2012/13 he achieved nine podium places, including four victories. At the 2013 World Championships in Voss , he won the Dual Moguls gold medal, making him the first male freestyler ever to become world champion three times in a row in the same discipline; in addition there was the silver medal in the Mughal competition.

Bilodeau started the 2013/14 World Cup season with three second places in a row, each behind Mikaël Kingsbury . In January 2014 he won three World Cup victories in a row, making him one of the most popular favorites for the gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics . In Sochi he lived up to expectations and repeated his Olympic victory. In the Moguls World Cup and in the overall World Cup standings, he ultimately had to admit defeat Kingsbury despite another victory.
