biography

Begg-Smith was a member of the Canadian freestyle junior squad and made his debut in the 2000/01 season in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup . On January 28, 2001, he took 18th place in the Sunday River World Cup for the first time. When the coaching staff complained that he was spending too much time on his recently launched businesses and neglecting to train, he left the Canadian Federation at the age of 16 and moved to Australia with his brother . This country was chosen because the local ski association was smaller and therefore more flexible. The brothers accepted a two-year ban in order to be able to start again in the World Cup from the 2003/04 season after obtaining Australian citizenship.

On December 20, 2003, Begg-Smith advanced to the top ten in a World Cup competition for the first time, followed by three podium places in the 2004/05 World Cup season. At the 2005 World Championships in Ruka , he won the bronze medal. On December 18, 2005, he won a World Cup competition for the first time in Oberstdorf . In the 2005/06 season, three more victories followed, with which he decided the World Cup discipline ranking for himself. His greatest success so far was at the 2006 Winter Olympics , when he lived up to his role as a favorite and won the gold medal. On February 21, 2006, just six days after winning the Olympics, the Australian Post issued a stamp in honor of his achievement.

Begg-Smith continued his winning streak in the 2006/07 season. He won five out of ten World Cup competitions and thus not only decided the Moguls discipline ranking for himself, but also the overall World Cup and the unique Dual Moguls discipline ranking. Also at the 2007 World Cup in Madonna di Campiglio was one of the best; he finished first in the Dual Moguls discipline and second in the Moguls discipline. Three more World Cup victories followed in the 2007/08 season and, for the third time in a row, he won the Moguls discipline.

Begg-Smith's best result in winter 2008/09 was only a fifth place. He also had to end the season prematurely due to an injury. He made a successful comeback in the 2009/10 season. He won three World Cup competitions and won the discipline ranking for the fourth time. Before the 2010 Winter Olympics , he was one of the most popular favorites to win, but he had to admit defeat to Canadian Alexandre Bilodeau in Cypress Mountain near Vancouver and be satisfied with the silver medal.

After more than three years of absence from the World Cup, Begg-Smith started at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He did not get past 15th place in the qualification and then announced his resignation.

controversy

Begg-Smith has been linked on various occasions to the proliferation of software that users consider undesirable. Several newspapers reported that numerous digital traces indicate that his companies AdsCPM and CPM Media had distributed malware , spyware , adware and spam . His manager at IMG described reports of this kind about his client as "exaggerated". However, after the Olympic victory in 2006, the domain registrations of his company's websites were changed and references to him were removed. In addition, individual websites that were still online before the Olympic media hype were deleted. Begg-Smith didn't answer questions about his companies in the media. He called reports of his multimillion dollar fortune rumors and said he had put his business on hold in favor of the sport.
