Pentti Kouri

Pentti Juha Kalervo Kouri (born February 12, 1949 in Kemijärvi , Finland , † January 22, 2009 in Los Angeles ) was a Finnish economist , venture capitalist and art collector .

Life

Pentii Kouri was the first Finn to receive a scholarship to attend the United World College of the Atlantic . Back in Finland, he received a Masters degree in Economics from Helsinki University in 1970, at the age of 21 . He was directly employed by the International Monetary Fund . There he met Michael Porter with whom he developed the Kouri-Porter model of international capital flows in 1974 . This model now serves as the basis of the modern asset approach to explain exchange rates . In 1974 he received his PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Pentti Kouri was an economics professor at Stanford , Yale , Helsinki and New York Universities .

He later worked as an investor . For example, he managed George Soros ' investments in Finland. Nowadays, Kouri is best known for his involvement in the so-called "Kouri deals" in the late 1980s. A group of investors bought most of Finland's two largest banks, essentially with borrowed money. The result was a shaking of the Finnish economy with a restructuring of the Finnish banking landscape. The shares were subsequently sold at high profits. As a result of this transaction, Koouri lost its reputation in Finland. The Finns blamed him - as a symbol of casino capitalism - for the recession in Finland in the 1990s.

Personal

He was married to Elly O. Kouri. They divorced in 1995. He built up a famous contemporary art collection in the 1980s and 1990s, which is now owned by the Finnish state. It was exhibited as the Kouri Collection at Kiasma , the contemporary art museum in Helsinki .
