Sakai ( Japanese 堺 市 , -shi ) is a city in Osaka Prefecture on Honshū , the main island of Japan .

geography

Sakai is located on Osaka Bay .

history

Sakai was mentioned as an important port in trade with the Empire of China as early as the 15th century . In the Edo period, Sakai was administered directly by a shogunate administrator (Sakai- bugyō ) . In 1868 the Sakai incident occurred , in which eleven French sailors were killed and the samurai involved were ordered to commit suicide in retaliation.

In the Meiji Restoration, Sakai became the administrative seat of Sakai Prefecture . The forerunner of the modern city of Sakai, the "district" / city district Sakai (Sakai-ku) , was created in 1880, from which the Sakai-shi emerged in 1889 when the local regulations co-written by Prussian advisors were introduced .

In April 2006, Sakai was divided into a city by government decree and thus into districts (ku) .

A total of 48 seats

Mayor of Sakai is former Prefectural MP Hideki Nagafuji of Osaka Ishin no Kai . He was elected in June 2019 against the former city parliament member Tomoaki Nomura (ex- LDP ), who was supported by the established parties, and another candidate to succeed Osami Takeyama, who resigned over a donation scandal (most recently anti-Ishin candidate of the established parties) . Nagafuji focused his campaign on other issues; But with his election victory, the Ishin no Kai's " Ōsaka-to- plan" is again up for debate to break up the cities of Osaka and Sakai into "special districts" of Osaka, which would then functionally like Tokyo to -to , a "metropolitan / Capital prefecture ”. The Ishin no Kai wants to make another attempt to dissolve the city of Osaka after their double victory in the gubernatorial and mayoral elections in the city of Osaka in April 2019 . When the city of Sakai will be included in the to-plan again is open.

The Sakai City Parliament ( Sakai-shigikai ) has 48 members from seven constituencies that are identical to the municipal districts. In the April 2019 election, Ōsaka Ishin no Kai was able to increase its relative majority.

The city elects eight members in six constituencies to the 88-member prefectural parliament of Osaka ( Ōsaka-fugikai ). After the 2019 election - also part of the unified elections in April - five of them (as of April 30, 2019) belong to the Ishin no Kai, three to the LDP parliamentary group.

In elections to the House of Representatives , the lower house of the national parliament, the majority of the city of Sakai forms the constituencies of Osaka 16 and 17, which in the 2017 House of Representatives elections unchanged the former MLIT minister Kazuo Kitagawa ( Kōmeitō ) and the former city parliament president Nobuyuki Baba ( Nippon Ishin no Kai ) won. The Mihara district of Sakai belongs to constituency 15, which spans the southeast of the prefecture to the border with Nara and Wakayama and which was won back in 2014 after two defeats in 2009 and 2012 by the liberal democrat Naokazu Takemoto .
