Savukoski [ ˈsɑvukɔski ] ( North Sami Suovvaguoika ) is a municipality in the Finnish part of Lapland .
In addition to the main town of Savukoski, the municipality includes the widely scattered settlements of Kuosku, Martti, Nousu, Tanhua, Lunkkaus, Viitaranta and Värriö. With a population density of just 0.16 people per square kilometer of land area, Savukoski is the most sparsely populated municipality in all of Finland. Reindeer herding is traditionally of great importance ; the breeding cooperative Kemi-Sompio is the largest in Finland.
By far the largest branch of the economy is forestry. After a large part of the primeval forest of the region was affected by often ruthless logging in the past, around a third of the municipal area is now designated as a nature reserve.
As is generally the case in structurally weak Lapland, unemployment is a big problem in Savukoski: In January 2007, the municipality had the fourth highest unemployment rate of all Finnish municipalities at 21.4%.
In the area of Savukoski there is also the mountain Korvatunturi , which the Finns believe is the home of Santa Claus . In addition to year-round “Christmas tourism”, Savukoski also attracts fishing and hunting tourists.
