The Korvatunturi ( North Sami Bealljeduottar , skoltsamisch Pelljatuõddâr , Inari Sami Peljituodâr and Russian Корватунтури , sometimes Корватундра, Korvatundra ), literally Ohrenberg , is a 486-meter-high mountain in the municipality of Savukoski in the Finnish part of Lapland . It is located on the border strip on the Finnish- Russian border in the Urho Kekkonen National Park . The boundary line runs over the middle of the three peaks of the mountain. To climb the mountain, you need a permit from the Finnish border guard.
Santa Claus
Based on a Christmas fairy tale by the Finnish radio broadcaster Markus Rautio ("Uncle Markus") from 1927, which was popular in the 1920s, and the children's book by Mauri Kunnas presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1981, Santa Claus ( joulupukki in Finnish ) lives inside the mountain with his reindeer and his helpers, the Wichteln ( tonttu ). This idea was taken up by the author Mauri Kunnas in his Christmas books. However, in his stories, the bringer of gifts lives in a small, secluded village on the mountainside.
Due to the increasing popularity and notoriety of the region, plans were made to set up a Christmas theme park there. However, since the mountain is located in a large protected area, the park was created in Rovaniemi - about 238 kilometers from Korvatunturi.
Based on the original story, the Finnish full-length fantasy horror film Rare Exports - A Christmas Story was directed in 2010 by Jalmari Helander .
