As in general in the rural areas of Northern Finland, the Center Party is the strongest political force in Kittilä . In the 2008 local elections it received just over half of the votes and had an absolute majority in the local council, the highest decision-making body on local issues, with 14 out of 27 seats. The second strongest force was the Left Alliance , which, as in general in Lapland, was disproportionately strong. It was able to unite around 30 percent of the votes and had eight seats on the local council. The Social Democrats and the National Assembly Party , although belonging to the three major parties nationwide, played only a marginal role in Kittilä with election results around ten percent and two or three members of the local council.
