The Hammerstein Ballroom is a former ballroom at 311 West 34th Street in Manhattan ( New York City ), which is now used for conventions and as a music venue.

history

Oscar Hammerstein I had the building built in 1906 as the Manhattan Opera House , as a venue for his Manhattan Opera Company . In 1910 their competitor, the Metropolitan Opera , paid Hammerstein $ 1.2 million to stop playing operas there for ten years. This led to the building being rebuilt to serve as a performance venue for different genres up to and including vaudeville .

Over the next few decades, the building changed ownership and purpose several times and was successively used as a dance hall, as a temple for the Freemasons and as a union hall. Then it was acquired by the Unification Church Sun Myung Moons , which operated the building as Manhattan Center Studios since 1986 and as Hammerstein Ballroom from 1997 after extensive renovations .

The hall is 1,100 square meters and can hold up to 3,500 visitors at concerts. For theater performances and banquets there is space for 2200 and 1000 visitors respectively in the event location. The building is also used for concerts and as a venue for the Overwatch League; internationally successful musicians such as David Bowie , Iron Maiden , Radiohead , Rammstein , Bob Dylan , Pet Shop Boys , Patti LaBelle , OAR and Bryan Adams performed here .
