Rock in Vienna is a music festival organized by Blue Moon Entertainment that took place for the first time from June 4 to 6, 2015 on the Danube Island in Vienna. The event was the first rock festival in the city of Vienna.
history
A total of 32 bands from the rock and metal genres played on the two stages on the Danube Island from Thursday to Saturday in the opening year. The “Mindstage” and “Soulstage” were placed next to each other so that there were hardly any musical breaks. As at many other festivals, there was also the opportunity to camp on site . According to the organizers, the festival wants to position itself as an “adult” compared to the competition. The free water dispensers on the premises were also a special feature .
Rock in Vienna was the last of three new DEAG festivals. The same headliners appeared at “ Rock im Revier ” in Gelsenkirchen and “ Rockavaria ” in Munich's Olympic Park from May 29th to 31st, 2015.
The first event had made little profit. Try a long-term structure of the festival. A continuation of Rock in Vienna on the Danube Island was therefore announced for 2016 , which finally took place from Friday to Sunday, June 3rd to 5th, 2016. In 2016 Rammstein , Apocalyptica , Iggy Pop , Iron Maiden , and Nightwish played among others . A new attendance record was set on Friday when 45,000 people watched the Rammstein concert. However, there were massive delays at the entrance, which was heavily criticized by numerous visitors. At the end of the Rammstein concert there was a power outage, so the band played their song Ohne Dich unplugged with acoustic guitars, a hand keyboard and a bell ring .
In 2017, a four-day sequel took place from June 2nd to 5th. Bands like Kings of Leon , In Extremo , Silbermond , Die Toten Hosen , Deichkind , Marteria , House of Pain , Left Boy , Beatsteaks and the Donots performed . On the last day, with 25,000 people, most of the guests came, which means that the attendance record of the previous year was far unmatched.
Band competition
Each of the three days of the 2015 kick-off festival was opened by an “Ultimate Opener Band” who won a slot at Rock in Vienna in a band competition organized by Blue Moon . All Austrian rock bands could apply for this in the run-up to the festival. In an online voting, the six audience favorites were determined, who then fought for two of the opening slots at Rock in Vienna in May in the U4 in Vienna .
Another possibility to get one of the three “Ultimate Opener Slots” was for one of the bands participating in the Super Challenge of the Planet Festival Tour in the Gasometer .

The headliners of the festival Metallica , Muse and Kiss as well as many other well-known artists attracted a total of 70,000 visitors to the Danube Island in 2015. With that, the festival with the originally calculated 50,000 visitors per day fell slightly short of expectations. Rock in Vienna was also characterized by a calm atmosphere.
The festival was both criticized and praised in the Austrian press. From the point of view of the Austrian daily Kurier, the grounds, the problem-free arrival and thus the possibility of sleeping at home spoke in favor of the festival . So the camping offer was only used marginally. The festival was criticized because of its high entry and food prices as well as the unimaginative billing, which would hardly differ from that of other larger festivals. Sound problems and the early curfew also gave cause for criticism. Die Presse's criticism was similar. The engagement of the unusual metal band Babymetal was highlighted .
