Coal Chamber was an American nu-metal - band from Los Angeles , which was founded in the 1994th Alongside Korn and Limp Bizkit, the band can be cited as one of the pioneers of the Nu-Metal scene, even though, according to music critics, Coal Chamber never managed to step out of its shadow.

history

The band, founded in 1994, initially consisted of Dez Fafara as singer and Meegs Rascon as guitarist, both of whom played together in the band She's in Pain . Bassist Rayna Foss joined the band through Fafara's girlfriend at the time. The three were now looking for a drummer and finally decided on Mike Cox. After three demos , the band managed to sign a record deal with Roadrunner Records in 1996 . The band received first attention in the Nu-Metal scene with the 1997 single "Loco" from their first, self-titled album.

Her second album Chamber Music was released in 1999 and featured guest appearances by Ozzy Osbourne and Aimee Echo (formerly Human Waste Project ). On the tour that followed, Nadja Peulen replaced the just pregnant Rayna Foss-Rose (at the time married to Morgan Rose von Sevendust ). In December 1999, the self-titled debut album in the US was awarded a gold plate . With Dark Days , the third coal chamber album was released in spring 2002. Shortly after the recordings, Rayna Foss-Rose left the band because she wanted to take care of her family. As a result, Nadja Peulen became a permanent member of the band. There were more and more verbal and sometimes physical disputes between Dez Fafara and Meegs Rascon, even on stage. In October 2002 Mike Cox was fired again due to differences with Dez Fafara and Meegs Rascon and the management was separated. The band was initially looking for a new drummer, but shortly afterwards all band activities were stopped. In 2003 Giving the Devil His Due , a compilation with demo songs, remixes and rare pieces, was released. Coal Chamber then officially dissolved.

In September 2011 the band announced that they wanted to reform in order to perform at the Australian Soundwave Festival in 2012 . After the performances at the Soundwave Festival it was initially quiet around the band. In September 2012 a short South America tour followed, in spring 2013 the band played a US tour with Sevendust . In the summer of 2013, concerts at various European festivals followed, including Rock am Ring , Download Festival , Hellfest , Graspop Metal Meeting , With Full Force and some European club shows.

At the end of October 2013 it was announced that Nadja Peulen was back in the band and Chela replaced Rhea Harper on bass guitar. Statements that there shouldn't be any new studio material from the band for the time being were revoked in August 2014 by signing a record deal with Napalm Records .

The recordings under the direction of music producer Mark Lewis for the album announced for spring 2015 were completed in December 2014. Accompanying the release of the album, the band will go on a US tour with Filter , Combichrist and American Head Charge . The new album is titled Rivals and was released in the United States on May 19th and in Europe on May 22nd . Then the band could be seen on a European tour with SOiL and Dope .

After that it was quiet again and singer Dez announced in an interview in 2016 that the band was pausing again because he wanted to concentrate fully on DevilDriver again. In the summer of 2017, Fafara announced that he would also play Coal Chamber songs live with DevilDriver and a little later ruled out a reunification of the latter.

Further activities of the band members

Dez Fafara is the singer of the band DevilDriver , which he founded while working for Coal Chamber. Meegs Rascon was active in the band Glass Piñata until 2009 . From 2010 to 2016 Meegs Rascon and Mike Cox played together in We are the RIOT . Meegs Rascon has been playing in the band Gemini Syndrome since September 2017 . Nadja Peulen founded the T-shirt company Cruel Tees and was involved in the Roadrunner United project for the 25th anniversary of Roadrunner Records . From 2010 to 2013 she was part of the band Vera Mesmer .
