Michael "Mike" Craig (born June 6, 1971 in London , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach as well as current scout , who played 449 games for the Minnesota North Stars , Dallas, between 1987 and 2013 Stars , Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League on the position of right winger . Craig also spent a considerable part of this time in the American Hockey League and the Austrian Erste Bank Eishockey Liga , where he won the Austrian Championship in 2005 with the Vienna Capitals and in 2009 with the EC KAC . In 1990 and 1991, he won the gold medal at the Junior World Championship with the Canadian U20 national team and twice the prestigious Spengler Cup in Team Canada .
Career
Craig first played three years from 1987 to 1990 in the Ontario Hockey League with the Oshawa Generals, a solid junior career in which he was able to increase his number of points every year. In the last season with the Generals, which also included Eric Lindros , he was able to win both the J. Ross Robertson Cup and the Memorial Cup . He also took part with his home country in the 1990 World Junior Championship , where he won the gold medal. He was able to defend the title again the following year.
After Craig was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1989 in the second round in 28th position by the Minnesota North Stars , they submitted to him before the 1990/91 season the first professional contract. After 39 appearances in his rookie season , the Canadian was part of the North Stars' regular squad from the second season onwards and before the 1993/94 season moved with the team to Dallas, Texas . Despite a 38-point 1992/93 season and 37-point season 1993/94, the Stars did not extend Craig's contract and let him move to the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent , as they had secretly hoped for more from him. In Toronto, the right winger could not meet the expectations placed on him in the following four years and was deported to the International Hockey League in the last of his year contract with the farm team . In the summer of 1998, he therefore moved to the San Jose Sharks , in whose NHL squad he did not find a place. After three years and only one NHL game, he moved again in the summer of 2000. This time the Colorado Avalanche was his goal, but did not come into play in the NHL either. Craig moved to San Jose again for the 2001/02 season , but was again only on the farm team. The two NHL appearances this season were his last.
Since the Canadian no longer saw any prospects in the NHL, he signed a one-year contract with the SCL Tigers from the Swiss National League A for the 2002/03 game year . Due to his commitment in Switzerland he played for Team Canada in the traditional Spengler Cup of HC Davos, which the Canadians won this year. The following year he went to the neighboring country in Austria to join the Vienna Capitals , where he stayed for four years. With Team Canada he defended the 2003 Spengler Cup title. In the 2004/05 season he led the team as the league's top scorer to win the Austrian championship . From the 2007/08 season until the end of the 2010/11 season he played for the Austrian record champions EC KAC . From October 2011 he played for the EC VSV.
In January 2013 he moved to Italy, where he played at HC Neumarkt from the A2 series before ending his career after the 2012/13 season. The Canadian then began to work as a coach and worked as an assistant coach for the Lethbridge Hurricanes from the Western Hockey League between summer 2013 and summer 2017 . Since the beginning of the 2017/18 season he has been employed as a scout by the Calgary Flames from the NHL .
