Zdeno Cíger (born October 19, 1969 in Martin , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player and current coach who has completed 352 NHL games for the New Jersey Devils , Edmonton Oilers , New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning . From 2006 to October 2008 he worked as the head coach of HC Slovan Bratislava . He is the head coach of the Slovak national team .

Career

Zdeno Cíger began his career in the youth teams of the MHC Martin , before moving to the junior team of Dukla Trenčín in 1986 . In the season 1987/88 he made his debut in the top division of the Czechoslovak Federation for Dukla and established himself within the team within the next two years. In the 1988 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the third round in 54th place. In the following season, 1988/89, he scored 18 goals and gave 30 assists and was named Rookie of the Year for this performance . A year later he decided to move to North America and initially played for the Utica Devils . After only eight games, Cíger was appointed to the NHL squad of the New Jersey Devils and completed the remainder of the 1990/91 season in New Jersey. Until the middle of the 1992/93 season he stayed with the Devils, before he was given in January 1993 together with Kevin Todd to the Edmonton Oilers , who in return sent Bernie Nicholls to New Jersey.

With the Oilers, Zdeno Cíger increased his points yield from year to year and reached a total of 70 points scorer in the 1995/96 season . After this success he returned to Slovakia and from that point on played for HC Slovan Bratislava in the Slovakian extra league . As a player, he won a total of four Slovak championship titles with Slovan and was elected to the All-Star team of the Extraliga five times . He also took part with Slovan Bratislava for several years in the European Hockey League , where Cíger was always one of the strongest offensive games.

In October 1998, the newly formed Nashville Predators acquired the rights to Cíger during the NHL Waiver Draft . Two years later, these rights went to the expansion team Minnesota Wild . Zdeno Cíger stayed in Slovakia in both cases because he was not signed. It wasn't until 2001 that he signed another NHL contract, this time with the New York Rangers. In December 2001, however, the Rangers transferred him to Tampa Bay, which gave Matthew Barnaby to the Rangers. After the 2001/02 season, Cíger returned to Slovan. Cíger completed a total of 352 NHL games, in which he scored 94 goals and gave 134 templates.

After returning from North America, he won the league championship with Slovan in 2003 and officially ended his career in 2004. Before the playoffs of the following season he was persuaded to make a comeback and shone with 21 scorer points in 19 playoff games. This engagement brought him another Slovakian championship title, but he resigned again from competitive sports. This process was repeated before the playoffs of the 2005/06 season: In another 15 season or playoff games he scored 13 points, but then decided to say goodbye to active competitive sport to work as assistant coach of the Slovak national team.

As a trainer

In August 2006, Cíger was the assistant coach of Július Šupler , the then head coach of the Slovak national team. A year later, he left the national team to concentrate on his club work and was replaced by Peter Oremus . In the summer of 2006, Cíger also took over the position of head coach at Slovan Bratislava and was able to win two Slovak championship titles with the club in the following two seasons.

In October 2008 he resigned as head coach at Slovan due to lack of success. During the 2010/11 season he again took over the coaching post at Slovan after Pavel Hynek was fired.

He has been the head coach of the Slovak national team since mid-2015 .

International

In addition to his successes at club level, Zdeno Cíger has also participated in many international title fights: for the selection teams of Czechoslovakia , he contested the U18 European Championship in 1987, the U20 World Championship in 1988 and the men's World Championship in 1989 and 1990 , where he won two bronze medals and one silver medal . With the national team of Slovakia he made it into the A group of the World Cup in 1995 and took part in the World Cup again and again until 2003. He was also a member of the Slovak squad at the 1998 Winter Olympics .

In the jersey of the Slovak national team, he completed a total of 106 games in which he scored 34 goals. For the national team of Czechoslovakia he scored 13 goals in 43 international matches.
