Harold John Snepsts (born October 24, 1954 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach and current scout , who played 1126 games for the Vancouver Canucks , Minnesota North Stars , Detroit during his playing career between 1972 and 1991 Red Wings and St. Louis Blues played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . In addition, he worked in various coaching positions in the National Hockey League, International Hockey League and Western Hockey League between 1991 and 2000 . Since the beginning of the 2005/06 season , Snepsts has been working as an amateur scout for his ex-team Vancouver Canucks.
Career
Snepsts spent his junior years between 1972 and 1974 with the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Western Canada Hockey League . After completing his junior career, he was selected in both the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft by the Vancouver Canucks and the 1974 WHA Amateur Draft by the Indianapolis Racers . The defender then decided to sign a contract with the Vancouver Canucks from the National Hockey League . After a few appearances on the farm team , the Seattle Totems in the Central Hockey League , the 20-year-old made it to the NHL roster. He belonged to this for the following ten years until the end of the 1983/84 season , before he was transferred to the Minnesota North Stars in exchange for Al MacAdam . During his time in Vancouver Snepsts took part twice in the NHL All-Star Game and reached the final of the Stanley Cup with the Canucks in the 1981/82 season . There Vancouver was defeated by the New York Islanders .
With the Minnesota North Stars, the defender only spent one season and then switched to the Detroit Red Wings as a free agent for the following three years until the summer of 1988 . He then returned to Vancouver as a free agent to his ex-team. His second stay in Vancouver ended after one and a half seasons, since he was given in March 1990 together with Rich Sutter and a second-round vote in the NHL Entry Draft in 1990 to the St. Louis Blues . In return, Adrien Plavsic , a first-round suffrage of the same draft and a second-round suffrage in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft moved to the Canucks. In the jersey of the Blues, the defensive player ended his active career after the 1990/91 game year at the age of 36.
After his career, however, Snepsts remained in the St. Louis Blues franchise and served as head coach of the Peoria Rivermen farm team in the International Hockey League in the 1991/92 season . In the following year he rose to the position of assistant coach of the St. Louis Blues under the head coaches Bob Plager and Bob Berry , before he returned to the IHL and was responsible for the San Diego Gulls in the 1993/94 season . The former defender then paused and only worked as head coach for the Portland Winter Hawks from the Western Hockey League at the beginning of the 1998/99 season . There he was released in the course of the following season. Snepsts then took another break and returned to the 2005/06 season as a scout in the Vancouver Canucks organization.
