Garth E. Snow (born July 28, 1969 in Wrentham , Massachusetts ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper and current - functional . He was active from 1993 to 2006 for the Québec Nordiques , Philadelphia Flyers , Vancouver Canucks , Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League . From 2006 to 2018 he was General Manager of the New York Islanders.
Career as a player
Garth Snow was selected in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft by the Québec Nordiques in the sixth round at position 114. He then played a year with the Stratford Cullitons before going on the ice for five years for the University of Maine .
In 1993 he came to his first assignment for the Québec Nordiques and it was followed by four more assignments in the 1993/94 season . During his career, Snow played 388 games in the NHL for the Québec Nordiques, Philadelphia Flyers , Vancouver Canucks , Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders . He never won a title and as number one he could not assert himself in any team for a long time.
In the 1994/95 season he played mainly for the Cornwall Aces in the American Hockey League , while he played two games for the Nordiques. After the season, the Nordiques moved to Denver and changed their name to Colorado Avalanche . Shortly thereafter, he was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers , where he formed the Flyers' goalkeeper team from 1995 to 1998 together with Ron Hextall . In the 1996/97 season , the Flyers reached the final series of the Stanley Cup against the Detroit Red Wings and lost them in four games. Snow made twelve appearances in the playoffs this season.
In March 1998 he was transferred to the Vancouver Canucks in an exchange deal for Sean Burke . There he initially took the post of goalkeeper, but had to share it with Félix Potvin the following year . After two years he left the Canucks and signed a contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins , where he shared the place as a regular goalkeeper with Jean-Sébastien Aubin . In early July 2001 he received a contract as a free agent with the New York Islanders . He became the back-up team there, first from Chris Osgood , and later from Rick DiPietro .
On July 18, 2006, Neil Smith , who had only been employed a month earlier, was fired as General Manager of the New York Islanders. Snow then ended his career and was introduced as the new general manager.

Garth Snow participated with the US national team in the 1994 Winter Olympics and the 1998 World Cup.

General manager career
Snow caused a stir when he provided goalkeeper Rick DiPietro with a $ 67.5 million contract over 15 years in September 2006, which was subsequently terminated in the summer of 2013. In his first season as General Manager, Garth Snow rebuilt the team. He signed players like Richard Zedník , Randy Robitaille and Marc-André Bergeron . The biggest coup came on February 27, 2007, when he signed striker Ryan Smyth from the Edmonton Oilers just minutes before the end of the transfer window . In total, he was general manager of the Islanders for twelve years, during which the team only got past the first playoff round once and only reached the post-season four times. In June 2018, he and head coach Doug Weight were fired and replaced by Lou Lamoriello , who had taken over as President of Hockey Operations in New York just a few weeks earlier .
