Santa Cesarea Terme is a south-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 2983 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lecce in Apulia . The municipality is located about 38 kilometers south-southeast of Lecce in southern Salento on the coast to the Mediterranean. Here the Adriatic Sea merges into the Ionian Sea .
history
The district of Cerfignano is said to go back to a Greek foundation. Vitigliano was first mentioned in a document in 1447. Four towers date from the 16th century and were built by Charles V in the Kingdom of Naples to protect against sea attacks.
