history
Alezio probably goes back to a Greek foundation. Inscriptions in the Oscar language have been found on the territory of the municipality . In Roman times, Aletium benefited from the Via Traiana , which linked it to other centers in Salento. Around the year 1000 Alezio was destroyed by the Saracens , the population fled to Gallipoli and the place was not inhabited for several centuries.
Between the 12th and 13th centuries, monks built a church, Santa Maria della Lizza , around which a settlement called Casal de Alezio arose. It was not until the beginning of the 18th century that local landowners leased land to farmers again. The place was then called Villa Picciotti . He did not become self-employed until 1854, and since 1873 it has again been called Alezio.
Culture
In addition to the church of Santa Maria della Lizza with frescoes from the Middle Ages, there is also the main church, Chiesa dell 'Addolorata , from the 19th century.
The museum, Museo civico messapico , shows finds from the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. BC, which come from a necropolis not far from the city.
