Melendugno is a south-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,001 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lecce in Apulia . The municipality (or its main town) is located about 17 kilometers southwest of Lecce . The localities ( fractions ) San Foca, Roca Vecchia and Torre dell'Orso of the municipality are located directly on the Adriatic Sea . Another faction is Borgagne . Melendugno is located in the middle to southern Salento .
history
Numerous dolmens have been preserved from the Bronze Age . Roca Vecchia , an archaeological site about seven kilometers east of the city center , named after the faction of the same name , is an important fortified settlement that has been systematically excavated since the 1980s and dates back to the 17th century BC. Chr. Existed until the early Iron Age and is still being researched. From approx. 1000 BC The Messapians settled in the area of Melendugno . The Roman settlement Thuria Sallentinum may have been here or nearby . Roca Nuova was a fortress built by the Count of Lecce in the late Middle Ages (14th century) .
The municipality has been called Città (city) since 2001 .
