history

The Ortsanem is derived from Borgo d'Agne , ( Place of the Lamb ), it was first mentioned in the 14th century. The previous name in Griko was Vrani .

A Basilian community existed in the area between the 7th and 10th centuries . The monks found refuge here after being expelled from both the Byzantine Empire (under Leo III ) and from parts of Africa and Sicily conquered by Muslims. The branch was a branch of the St. Nicholas Monastery of Casole near Otranto .

The remains of some Lawren bear witness to this time . A settlement was built around these places of prayer and at the same time several farmsteads were built in the surrounding area.
