Porto Cesareo is a south-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6293 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lecce in Apulia . The municipality is located about 25 kilometers west-southwest of Lecce in Salento on the Gulf of Taranto . Porto Cesareo borders directly on the province of Taranto .
history
The village already existed in Roman antiquity under the name Portus Sasinae . Numerous preserved towers illustrate the military importance in the Middle Ages.
