Cursi (in the local dialect: Cùrze ) is a south-eastern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 4037 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Lecce in Apulia . The municipality is located about 26 kilometers south-southeast of Lecce in southern Salento . Cursi belongs to the Graecia Salentina , in which Griko is still spoken.

history

The place name Cursi is said to come from the Roman centurion Marcus Curtius , who managed to conquer this area, which was known as Curtium in ancient times . Several menhirs already indicate a prehistoric settlement.
