Monteroni di Lecce ( Muntrùni in the Apulian dialect ) is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ). Its name comes from the toponym Mons Tyronum ( mountain of the spearmen ).
geography
The community has 13,779 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the province of Lecce in Apulia in the middle of Salento , about 7.5 kilometers west of the city of Lecce .
history
In the mountains that are now called San Filii , the Romans established a military base. During the rule of the Normans , Monteroni belonged to the Count of Lecce as a fief . From 1250 the De Cremona family ruled , later the Montoroni family . With the 16./17. In the 19th century the place became a fiefdom of the Duke of Spongano .

The Monteroni di Lecce train station is on the Novoli – Gagliano Leuca railway line .
