Gagliano Leuca , the southernmost train station in Apulia and two railcars of the Ad series

The Novoli – Gagliano Leuca railway is part of the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) network, which has been part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) since August 4, 2016 .

history

Today's route from Novoli via Nardò to Gagliano Leuca is historically composed of two sections with different origins:

Ferrovie Salentine

The Ferrovie Salentine , one in Puglia regional automatic train company , established the route Lecce-Franca Villafontana together with a branch line from Novoli according Nardò Centrale. This network was opened on May 27, 1907. In 1911, they opened two railway lines that opened up the south of the Apulian peninsula. To do this, she extended the branch line. On November 4, 1911, the extension from Nardò Centrale to Gagliano Leuca went into operation.

FSE

From autumn 1931, a number of small regional railway companies in Apulia merged to form the Ferrovie del Sud Est. These included the Ferrovie Salentine . In the period that followed, the original kilometrage was replaced by the current one.

Route description

The line is single-track , not electrified and 74.2 km long.

The double name of the terminus Gagliano Leuca, where the two lines of the Ferrovie Salentine met (the other leads to Maglie ), refers on the one hand to Gagliano del Capo, the place where the train station is located, and on the other to the neighboring Santa Maria di Leuca, with a well-known Marian shrine . The entrance building of the Gagliano Leuca train station, called Lastation, also serves as an “art station” with an exhibition area for artists that can also be used for other artistic activities.

business

Line 3 of the FSE runs on the route, primarily with class Ad 31-45 railcars , which correspond to the series ALn 668.1900 and 668.1000 of the FS.
