The Casarano – Gallipoli railway is part of the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) network, which has been part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) since August 4, 2016 .
history
Ferrovie Salentine
The railway line was built in 1919 by the Ferrovie Salentine at the insistence of the military to shorten the transport route from the port of Gallipoli to the south of the Apulian peninsula, where there was no other port. The route chosen only shortened the route by around eight kilometers because it was passed by some towns for civilian traffic.
FSE
In 1931, as a merger of some small regional railway companies in Apulia, including Ferrovie Salentine , Ferrovie del Sud Est was founded, which operated the line from that point on.
Route description
The line is single-track , not electrified and 22.0 km long. The descent of the route from the Apulian plateau to coastal height (4 m) takes place in the urban area of Gallipoli on a ramp, through a deep, steep incision in a rock formation.
business
Line 4 of the FSE runs on the route.
