Acquarica del Capo was a south-east Italian municipality ( comune ) until May 14, 2019 . Today Acquarica del Capo is a district (fraction) of the municipality of Presicce-Acquarica .

Acquarica Castle

geography

The community has 4653 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2017). It is located in the province of Lecce in Apulia , about 50 kilometers south-southeast of the city of Lecce in southern Salento .

history

Acquarica came into being after the Saracens destroyed other villages in the 9th or 10th century. The Acquarica castle complex was built in 1190 by the Norman Tankred von Hauteville . However, it only got its current form after it was destroyed in 1432, after which it was expanded and rebuilt by Giovanni Antonio Orsini del Balzo . Inside the castle, the remains of the former church of San Francesco, which houses some noble graves, are still preserved.

The Strada Statale 274 Salentina Meridionale leads through the municipality from Gallipoli to Santa Maria di Leuca .

The Presicce-Acquarica station is on the Novoli – Gagliano Leuca railway line .
