The Zollino – Gagliano Leuca railway is part of the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) network, which has been part of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) since August 4, 2016 .

history

Today's Zollino – Gagliano Leuca route is historically made up of two sections with different origins:

  • Zollino – Maglie and
  • Maglie-Gagliano Leuca

Zollino-Maglie

On May 2, 1865, the Società Italiana per le Strade Ferrate Meridionali began operations on the Adriatic Railway to Brindisi , on January 15, 1866 to Lecce and on February 1, 1868 to Maglie , to its end point Otranto on September 22, 1872 to reach. When the large railway companies in Italy were nationalized in 1905 and combined in the Ferrovie dello Stato , this included the Bologna – Otranto line and thus the Zollino – Maglie section of today's Zollino – Gagliano Leuca line.

Maglie-Gagliano Leuca

The Ferrovie Salentine opened two railway lines in 1911 , which opened up the south of the Apulian peninsula. On October 16, 1911, the Maglie – Gagliano Leuca line went into operation as one of the lines.

FSE

In 1931, as a merger of some small regional railway companies in Apulia , including Ferrovie Salentine , Ferrovie del Sud Est was founded. In order to consolidate their operations, the state railway ceded its network, which was south of Lecce, to this merger in 1933. This included the southern section of the Bologna – Otranto line and thus the Zollino – Maglie section. As a result, the original kilometrage was replaced by the current one, creating the Zollino – Gagliano Leuca line.

Route description

The line is single-track , not electrified and 46.5 km long. The terminus of the line, Gagliano Leuca , is a through station , as the line to Nardò Centrale connects there.

The double name of the terminus Gagliano Leuca, where the two lines built by the Ferrovie Salentine meet (the other leads to Maglie), refers on the one hand to Gagliano del Capo , the place where the train station is, and on the other to the neighboring one Santa Maria di Leuca with a well-known Marian shrine . The entrance building of the Gagliano Leuca train station, called Lastation, also serves as an “art station” with an exhibition area for artists that can also be used for other artistic activities.

business

Line 6 of the FSE runs on the route, both with old railcars of the Ad 31-45 series , which correspond to the series ALn 668.1900 and 668.1000 of the FS, and with the latest vehicles, the railcars of the ATR 220 series.
