The Maglie – Otranto railway is part of the Ferrovie del Sud Est (FSE) network, which has belonged to the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) since August 4, 2016 .

history

Ferrate Meridionali

On May 2, 1865, the Società Italiana per le Strade Ferrate Meridionali began operations on the Adriatic Railway to Brindisi , on January 15, 1866 to Lecce and on February 1, 1868 to Maglie , to its end point Otranto on September 22, 1872 to reach. When the major railway companies in Italy were nationalized in 1905 and combined in the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, this included the Bologna – Otranto line.

FSE

In 1931, the Ferrovie del Sud Est was founded in Apulia as an amalgamation of a few small regional railway companies . In order to consolidate their operations, the state railway ceded its network, which was south of Lecce, to this merger in 1933. This included the southernmost section of the Bologna – Otranto railway line. As a result, the original kilometrage was replaced by the current one, creating the Maglie – Otranto line.

Route description

The line is single-track , not electrified and 18.3 km long. It ends in Otranto in a terminal station on a slope above the historic town center. Due to the incline of the slope, the platform level is at the level of the first floor of the reception building , the station forecourt is one floor below.

business

Line 7 of the FSE runs along the route. Some trains run to Zollino or Lecce.
