Roman Šimíček (born November 4, 1971 in Ostrava , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played for HC Vítkovice in the Czech Extra League , the Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League and for HPK Hämeenlinna in the SM-liiga was active. Since 2018 he has been head coach at HC Košice from the Slovak extra league .

Career

Club

Roman Šimíček began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown at HC Vítkovice , for whose professional team he played from 1989 to 1998, initially in the top Czechoslovak league , and from the 1993/94 season in the newly founded Czech extra league. With Vítkovice the attacker failed in the 1996/97 season in the playoff final for the championship at HC Petra Vsetín . In the summer of 1998, the Czech moved to other European countries for the first time, where he was on the ice for the HPK Hämeenlinna in the Finnish SM-liiga in the following two years .

In the NHL Entry Draft 2000 , Šimíček was selected in the ninth round as a total of 273rd player by the Pittsburgh Penguins . For the Americans, he scored three goals and provided six assists in 29 games in the National Hockey League . On January 13, 2001, he was given in exchange for Steve McKenna to the Minnesota Wild , for which he ran up in the following one and a half years, where he in the 2001/02 season mainly for their farm team , the Houston Eros , in the American Hockey League was used. The Czech started the 2002/03 season at HIFK Helsinki in Finland and ended it at HC Sparta Prague in the Extraliga. After a year and a half, the left shooter left the capital and signed with his ex-club HC Vítkovice Steel, with which he was under contract until 2009. For the 2009/10 season, the 1999 world champion was signed by HC Dukla Trenčín from the Slovak Extra League.

For the 2010/11 season , Šimíček moved to GKS Tychy from the Polish Ekstraliga . With the team, he was runner-up right away. During the 2012/13 season he was player assistant coach at GKS before retiring from his career.

As a trainer

From the end of his career in 2013, Šimíček was assistant coach at HC Vítkovice before he was dismissed in the middle of the 2014/15 season and moved to the coaching staff of HC Košice . There he was under contract until October 2015 and then took over the position of head coach at HK 36 Skalica .

From December 2016, Šimíček was head coach at Orli Znojmo from the multinational EBEL before his contract was terminated at the end of January 2018 and he moved to HC Košice.

International

For the Czech Republic , Šimíček took part in the 1997 and 1999 World Championships .
