David Moravec (born March 24, 1973 in Opava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who was active for many years for HC Vítkovice in the Czech extra league. In his long career he also played a game for the Buffalo Sabers in the National Hockey League .
Career
David Moravec began his career at HC Vítkovice , for which he made his debut in the Czech extra league in the 1994/95 season . He stayed with his club until 1999 and improved his game from year to year. In 1997 HC Vítkovice was the Czech runner-up behind HC Vsetín . In the following season Moravec was top scorer of the Extraliga and the team reached the third league place.
It was not until the age of 25 that Moravec was selected by the Buffalo Sabers in the eighth round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in 218th place. However, he did not immediately move to North America, but played the 1998/99 season for his home club. In the summer of 1999 he moved to the Sabers, but returned to Vítkovice after an NHL game. In the 2001/02 season he was again runner-up with HC Vítkovice after the team had failed in the playoff final at HC Sparta Prague .
After a year-long stint with Lokomotive Yaroslavl in the Russian Super League , Moravec returned to the Extraliga and played again for Vítkovice and from 2005 for HC Lasselsberger Plzeň . At the end of the 2005/06 season he was obliged by the then Swedish second division team Malmö Redhawks , with whom he realized the promotion to the Elitserien in the Kvalserien .
In the following season, Moravec completed 30 games for the Malmö Redhawks in the Elitserien. In the middle of the 2006/07 season he moved to HPK Hämeenlinna in the Finnish SM-liiga , where he reached the playoff semi-finals with his new team.
In July 2007, the DEL climber Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg announced the commitment of David Moravec. EHC sporting director Karl-Heinz Fliegauf said of Moravec: "David has consistently demonstrated his international class for many years. Whether in his home country of the Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden or, as recently, in Finland. He is looking for a new one Challenge and wants to show his class also in the DEL. He is a player who can be used universally due to his playful class. I am sure that he will be an important cornerstone of our team with us. With his professional attitude, David will be a role model for our younger players who can certainly learn a lot from him. "
After only 24 games for the Grizzlies, his contract was dissolved and Moravec moved back to the Czech Republic for HC Oceláři Třinec . In October 2009 he was loaned to HC Havířov to collect match practice. He also played a few games for Hokej Šumperk in 2003 before moving to MHk 32 Liptovský Mikuláš in the Slovak Extra League. Since the MHk 32 relegated at the end of the season, Moravec looked again for a new club and went in eleven games of the following season for the HK Nitra on the ice before he was released again. The 2010/11 season he finished in the third Czech division, the 2nd národní hokejová liga , at HC Orlová .
International
David Moravec has participated in all major international championships throughout his career. With the Czech national team , he won two gold and one bronze medals at world championships . The greatest success of his career was winning the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano .
His most important goal in the national dress was the decisive goal in the final of the world championship against Finland at the men's ice hockey world championship in 2001 in Hanover, when he pocketed the puck to make it 3-2 in the eleventh minute of extra time.
