history
The HPK Hämeenlinna was founded in December 1929 as Hämeenlinna Jääpalloseura . A year later the current name was registered for the club. Initially, the club focused exclusively on bandy , but soon expanded its offerings to include pesäpallo and football . In 1936 the HPK Pesäpallo team became Finnish champions.
After the Second World War, the ice hockey section was founded, which began with a hobby team and rose to the regional league in 1948. In the 1950s, ice hockey replaced bandy as the club's most important sport.
In addition to the ice hockey section, the club also had a hockey department , which became Finnish champions in 1951, 1952 and 1953. In the 1970s and 1980s, the HPK ice hockey team was one of the dominant teams in the I-divisioona , Finland's second division, but without advancing to the first division, today's SM-liiga . In the mid-1980s, the promotion project was started, which in 1988 led to the championship of the second division and qualification for the top division. In 1991 , HPK finished fourth in the regular season and reached third place in the play-offs. Two years later, at the end of the 1992/93 season , the HPK reached the championship final for the Canada malja , in which the team from Hämeenlinna failed 3-1 at TPS Turku .
In the 2005/06 season , the HPK took third place after the main round and penetrated into the play-off final. In this he beat Porin Ässät's team 3-1. The HPK won the first Finnish ice hockey championship in the club's history and qualified for the IIHF European Champions Cup 2007 . The team from Hämeenlinna won the silver medal at this national championship tournament.
In the 2009/10 season , the HPK again won the SM-liiga runner-up title after being defeated by TPS Turku 1: 4 in the final.
After 13 years, Hämeenlinna won the Finnish championship title again in the 2018/19 season : HPK prevailed 4: 3 against Kärpät Oulu in an exciting final series. The decision in the seventh game was not made until extra time, when Markus Nenonen scored the decisive goal.
