Jānis Sprukts (born January 31, 1982 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian ice hockey player who has been under contract with HK Kurbads in the Latvian ice hockey league since 2017 .
Career
Sprukts began his career in his hometown with the Essamika Juniors . In the NHL Entry Draft 2000 he was selected by the Florida Panthers in the eighth round in 234th position and moved to North America during the 2001/2002 season, where he played for Acadie-Bathurst Titan in the Canadian Junior League QMJHL .
For the 2003/04 season, Sprukt returned to the Latvian league for the army club ASK / Ogre . After a brief stint in Denmark at Odense IK , Sprukts moved to HK Riga 2000 in summer 2004 , where he became the Latvian champion . In the 2005/06 season Sprukts played in Finland for Hämeenlinnan Pallokerho , where he won the Finnish championship with the team .
During the 2006/07 season , Sprukts first moved to the American Hockey League for the Rochester Americans , where he was voted Player of the Season. Due to his excellent performance in the AHL Sprukts was called twice during the season in the NHL to the Florida Panthers, in which Sprukts fought for a regular place at the end of the season.
In preparation for the 2007/2008 season, however, Sprukts did not get a permanent place in the Panthers squad and moved back to the Finnish first division to Rauman Lukko at the start of the season . In August 2008 he signed a new two-year contract with the Florida Panthers, which applies to both the NHL and the AHL. In the following season he came only to one NHL mission, so he decided to return to Europe in the summer of 2009. In July 2009 he was signed by Dinamo Riga and completed over 170 KHL games for Dinamo in the following three years. In May 2012 he moved within the league to HK CSKA Moscow , where he received a two-year contract. For ZSKA, he completed 59 KHL games before his current contract was terminated in return for payment of compensation. Subsequently, Sprukts was without a contract and was only signed by Lokomotive Yaroslavl in October of the same year .
At the end of November 2014, his contract with Lokomotive was terminated and Sprukts was initially without a club. In January 2015 he was finally signed by Friborg-Gottéron from the Swiss National League A and played seven games for the Swiss club. He was then again without a job before he was signed by MHC Martin from the Slovakian Extraliga in January 2016 .
Between December 2016 and April 2017 he was active at Ritten Sport from the Alps Hockey League .
Sprukt's particular strengths on the ice are his enormous physical presence at 1.90 m in height and 107 kg, as well as his excellent technical skills for a player of this size.
