Career

Tom Koivisto began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of TPS Turku , for whose professional team he was in the SM-liiga for two and a half years from 1992 and for whose farm team Kiekko-67 Turku he was active in the second-class I divisioona during the same period . During this period, he and his team were Finnish champions for the first time in the 1992/93 season and runner-up in 1994. During the 1994/95 season , the defender moved to TPS 'league rivals HPK Hämeenlinna , for whom he played a total of four and a half years. He was then under contract with Jokerit Helsinki from 1999 to 2002 . With the capital club he was first runner-up in 2000 and finally champion in the 2001/02 season . In the championship year he was elected to the All-Star Team of the SM-liiga and received the Pekka-Rautakallio trophy as the best defender in the league .

In the 2002 NHL Entry Draft Koivisto was selected in the eighth round as a total of 253rd player by the St. Louis Blues . In his only season in the National Hockey League , the 2002/03 season , he scored a total of two goals and four assists in 22 games for the St. Louis Blues. At the same time he played for their farm team Worcester IceCats mostly in the American Hockey League . In the following season , the Finnish international played exclusively for Worcester, whereupon the Blues transferred him to the Phoenix Coyotes on March 9, 2004 . There he was only used for their AHL farm team Springfield Falcons , whereupon he returned to Europe, where he spent two seasons for Frölunda HC in the Swedish Elitserien , with whom he was in the 2004/05 season, from 2004 to 2008 Swedish champion and a year later was runner, and the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers of the Swiss National League A .
