He also played for his hometown club Tappara in the Liiga and various other European clubs for many years . The greatest successes of his career include winning the gold medal at the U20 World Cup in 1998 , winning the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2007 and winning the Continental Cup in 2008 , both with Ak Bars Kazan .

Career

Beginnings at Tappara

Mika Noronen as goalkeeper for Rochester Americans (2002)

Mika Noronen began his career in the youth division of Tappara from his hometown of Tampere . In 1994 he won the U16-SM-sarja championship with the club's U16 team and then moved to the U18 division. During the 1996/97 season he made his debut for Tappara's professional team in the SM-liiga and was part of the professional squad from the following season.

Career in North America

In the 1997 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the first round in 21st place by the Buffalo Sabers . From 1999 he played with the Rochester Americans , the AHL farm team of the Buffalo Sabers and the Florida Panthers . In the 2000/01 season Mika Noronen was used for the first time in an NHL game. In the two years the Finn played twice for the Sabers and won both games. Due to his good statistics, the goalie was called up more and more often in Buffalo's starting squad and he was used 35 times in the 2003/2004 season. Mika Noronen became the eighth goalie in NHL history to score a goal. He achieved this on February 14, 2004 in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs . In March 2006, Noronen was given in exchange for a draft right to the Vancouver Canucks , where he played his first game on March 14.

Successes and changing teams in Europe

Before the 2006/07 season, the Canucks committed Roberto Luongo and equipped him with a multi-year contract. Since Noronen didn't want to act only as a back-up again , he signed a contract with the Russian superleague club Ak Bars Kazan . With Kazan he won the European Champions Cup in 2007 and the IIHF Continental Cup in 2008 . During the 2007/08 season, Noronen missed several weeks due to an injury, so Ak Bars signed Robert Esche , who eventually replaced Noronen as the number 1 goalkeeper . Therefore, Noronen moved in July 2008 to the KHL club Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod . For Torpedo he completed 14 games in the KHL before moving to Linköpings HC in the Elitserien in January 2009 . He reached the playoffs with the LHC before being signed by JYP Jyväskylä to replace the injured Pekka Tuokkola in September 2009 . For this club he was on the ice in three games of the 2009/10 season before moving to Helsingfors IFK in December 2009 . With the HIFK Noronen reached the playoffs, in which he completed six games. After the 2009/10 season, Noronen was initially unemployed and only got a new contract with Rauman Lukko in November 2010 . Noronen also played for Lukko in the 2011/12 season and completed 51 games for the Rauma club . In the summer and autumn of 2012, Noronen looked unsuccessfully for a job abroad and was only hired by his hometown club Tappara in January 2013, which was looking for an experienced back-up for Juha Metsola .

The 2013/14 season began Noronen at the Swiss HC Davos , where he received a two-month contract in October 2013 to replace the injured Leonardo Genoni . In January 2014 he was signed by EHC Red Bull Munich from the German Ice Hockey League until the end of the season and completed eight appearances for the club. In the following season he was injured and only returned to the ice in February 2015 for the Finnish second division club Lempäälän Kisa . Due to good performance, he was used again as a back-up for Juha Metsola at Tappara during the season and signed an extension contract with Tappara after the season. He started the 2015/16 season at Tappara, but moved to the Malmö Redhawks in the fall . After about a month he left the Swedish club and was initially without a club. In February 2016, Noronen signed another contract with Lempäälän Kisa. For LeKi he played six more games in the Mestis before ending his career.

International

Mika Noronen began to represent his native Finland in international tournaments early in his career. At the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 1995 he took second place with the Finnish U-17 national team and was himself appointed to the tournament's all-star team. A year later he won the silver medal at the U18 European Championship with the U18 junior team and was called up again to the All-Star team. At the U18 European Junior Championships in 1997 , he became European Champion, after having participated in the U20 World Junior Championships with the Finnish U20 team at the turn of the year 1996/97 . At the end of the European Championship tournament in 1997, he was recognized as the best goalkeeper for his good performance and reassigned to the All-Star team.

Another year later he won the gold medal at the U20 Junior World Championship . He was used in five games, all of which ended with victories for the Finns and achieved excellent statistical values with a catch rate of 93.4 percent and an average goal conceded of 1.53. Therefore, he was appointed to the Second All-Star Team of the World Cup.

In the senior sector, he represented his home country at the 2004 World Cup , where the Finnish national team took sixth place.
