Thomas Arthur "Tom" Askey (born October 4, 1974 in Tonawanda , New York ) is a former American ice hockey goalkeeper who has played for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the National Hockey League during his career .
Career
The American began his career in 1991 with the Wheatfield Blades and then went on the ice for the Ohio State University ice hockey team from 1992 to 1996 . In 1996 he was elected to the CCHA Second All-Star Team because of his achievements . During this time he was selected in the eighth round of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft at a total of 186th position by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim . For the 1996/97 season he was with the Baltimore Bandits in the American Hockey League on the ice and was able to have a catch quota of 88.7 percent in 40 games , where he was able to book the first shutout of his professional career. The following year he played for both the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and their farm team , the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks , in the American Hockey League. Since the Ducks had two potential goalkeepers with Mikhail Schtalenkow and Guy Hebert at that time , Askey received only seven appearances in the regular season of the National Hockey League and one use in the play-offs in two years .
In the 1999/2000 season he was in use with the Kansas City Blades and Houston Eros in the International Hockey League , for which he completed 13 games each. In September 2000 he signed as a free agent with the Rochester Americans . In the following five years he was able to have a constant catch rate between 89 and 92 percent, but he was denied a regular place. In 2001, he and his teammate Mika Noronen received the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award for the lowest goal conceded . In the 2005/06 season he played mainly at the Finnish team HIFK Helsinki in the SM-liiga and changed in the same season each for a few games available for local rivals Jokerit Helsinki and Friborg-Gottéron from the Swiss National League A .
In the following year, Askey returned to North America and joined the Kalamazoo Wings . He played 45 games with the Wings and was able to book three shutouts. For the 2007/08 season he moved to Serie A1 , the top Italian division, and played eleven games for HC Alleghe . He then joined the Nottingham Panthers playing in the Elite Ice Hockey League . After he achieved a catch quota of 92 percent in 34 games for the Panthers, his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2008.
After almost two years without engagement, Askey signed in March 2010 as a free agent with the Kalamazoo Wings in the ECHL . After a few days he left the club without having played a game.
International
Askey represented his home country at the 1997 World Cup when he finished sixth with the US national team at the tournament. In his only tournament appearance, he had to accept four goals.
