Mikko Oskari Jokela (born March 4, 1980 in Lappeenranta ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who was under contract with the EC VSV in the EBEL from May to October 2016 and has been playing for KooKoo in the Finnish Liiga since November 2016 .

Career

Mikko Jokela began his career as a hockey player in the youth division of KalPa Kuopio , where he was active until 1997. He then moved to HIFK Helsinki , for whose professional team he made his debut in the SM-liiga in the 1997/98 season and with whom he immediately won the Finnish championship in his rookie year . After he had started the 1998/99 season at HPK, the defender returned to Kuopio, where he ended the season. From 1999 to 2001 he played for his league rival SaiPa Lappeenranta before he was called to North America by the New Jersey Devils , who had already selected him in the fourth round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft as the 96th player . There he came in a year and a half but only for their farm team from the American Hockey League , the Albany River Rats . On January 24, 2003 he was specified in exchange for Steve Kariya to the Vancouver Canucks , for which he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2002/03 season , this being his only use in the NHL. The rest of the time until 2004, however, spent the Finn again in the AHL, in which he was on the ice for Vancouver's Manitoba Moose farm team .

For the 2004/05 season Jokela signed in his Finnish homeland with HPK Hämeenlinna , for which he played for a total of three years in the SM-liiga and with which he was also Finnish champion in 2006. He was also defeated in the final of the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2007 6-0 against Russian opponents Ak Bars Kazan . After two seasons at Jokerit Helsinki , the national player received a contract with HK Dinamo Minsk from the Continental Hockey League . After the 2009/10 season , his contract was not renewed and the Finn decided to sign a two-year contract with Timrå IK . His contract there was terminated in March 2011 after Jokela had expressed the wish to return to his Finnish homeland. Two months later he received a contract with HIFK Helsinki, for which he played until 2014 and played over 150 games in the Liiga.

In 2014 he returned to his hometown club and was appointed captain at KalPa. After two years at KalPa, Jokela went abroad again, he signed with the EC VSV from the EBEL in May 2016 . However, at the end of October 2016, Jokela announced his return to Finland for family reasons. Since November 2016 he has been playing for KooKoo in the Finnish Liiga.
