Tommi Santala (born June 27, 1979 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Helsingfors IFK in the Liiga since May 2018 .
Career
Tommi Santala began his career as a professional player in 1998 at Jokerit Helsinki after having worked in the youth department there. In the 1999 NHL Entry Draft he was selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the ninth round in a total of 245th place. However, Santala stayed in Finland and moved to league rivals HPK Hämeenlinna during the 1999/00 season .
After three good and one bad years at this club, he ventured to North America in 2003 . He played 33 games in the National Hockey League for the Atlanta Thrashers, in which he scored one goal and two assists . Most of his time, however, he spent in the American Hockey League with the Chicago Wolves , including the 2004/05 season . For the 2005/06 season he returned to Jokerit Helsinki, as the Thrashers loaned him there so that he did not have to spend the last year of his contract in the AHL again. After the season, Atlanta transferred his rights to the Vancouver Canucks , which brought him back to North America. But he did not make the final breakthrough again because he was out for a long time due to a knee injury. After a season with the Canucks and their farm team , the Manitoba Moose , he returned to Jokerit Helsinki when his contract had expired. He played his best season so far with 58 scorer points , after which many European clubs showed interest in him. Finally, he signed a contract with the Kloten Flyers of the Swiss National League A .
He stayed in Kloten until December 2016 and then received clearance to move to the Continental Hockey League at HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk . With Metallurg he reached the playoff final of the KHL and scored 12 scorer points for the club in 32 games. In July 2017, Tommi Santala returned to EHC Kloten and signed a one-year contract. In the following months he scored 35 points scorer in 49 season games for the EHCK, which was relegated to the second division at the end of the season. Therefore Santala decided to return to Finland and was signed by Helsingfors IFK .
International
Santala took part with the Finnish national team in the ice hockey world championships in 2003 and 2006 . He was able to win the bronze medal in 2006. Another success was the first place in the Karjala Cup in 2002. He also played in the junior division at the 1999 World Junior Championship .
