Petteri Wirtanen (born May 28, 1986 in Hyvinkää ) is a Finnish ice hockey player who has been under contract with Djurgården Hockey from Svenska Hockeyligan since November 2018 .

Petteri Wirtanen began his career in 2004 at HPK Hämeenlinna in the SM-liiga , for which he played for two years and won the Finnish championship in 2006 . He moved there in 2002 after having learned to play ice hockey at his home club, Ahmat Hyvinkää . In a total of 71 games, he reached twelve points and received 36 penalty minutes. Wirtanen was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 by the Anaheim Ducks in the sixth round in a total of 172nd position. The next two years the attacking player spent mostly with the Portland Pirates , the then farm team of the Ducks, in the American Hockey League .

In the 2007/08 season he was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time and used in three games in which he was able to contribute a hit. The Finn spent the following year again in a minor league and was active for the Iowa Chops , which were also part of the southern Californians' farm team at the time. In 78 games he scored 41 points and received 50 penalty minutes. The Chops were banned from playing for the 2009/10 season , after which he returned to his Finnish homeland and signed a contract with HIFK Helsinki , for which he played until 2012. With the HIFK he won another Finnish championship in 2011 and led his team onto the ice as assistant captain in the following season.

In May 2012 Wirtanen received a contract with KHL newcomer HK Donbass Donetsk and played there until 2014. In September 2014 he received a fixed-term contract with Friborg-Gottéron from the National League A , which was ultimately extended to the beginning of November 2014. He then moved to Jokerit in the Continental Hockey League and played there for four years, in which he completed more than 180 KHL games.

Before the 2018/19 season he did not receive a new contract with the Jokers and moved to the Finnish Liiga to Turun Palloseura (TPS). There he was used until November before he was given to Djurgården Hockey from the Svenska Hockeyligan .

International

At the U20 Junior World Championship in 2006 he won the bronze medal with the U20 national team of Finland. He also played at the 2004 U18 World Junior Championship .

In the senior sector, Wirtanen was used at games on the Euro Hockey Tour between 2010 and 2012 .
