Rostislav Klesla (* 21st March 1982 in Novy Jicin , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player , who during his playing career from 1997 to 2016 among other 677 games for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Phoenix Coyotes in the National Hockey League in position of the defense attorney has denied.

Career

In his youth, Klesla first played in his home country with the juniors of HC Slezan Opava . In the summer of 1998, at the age of 16, the defender moved to North America, where he played in the United States Hockey League with the Sioux City Musketeers and in the Ontario Hockey League with the Brampton Battalion . During his time in Brampton, he was selected in the first round in the first round of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the NHL Entry Draft 2000 , making him the first player ever to be drafted by the Blue Jackets.

At the beginning of the 2000/01 season , the native Czech made his debut in the NHL, but was sent back to the OHL after the end of the first month of play. From the 2001/02 season he was finally part of the squad of the team from the US state of Ohio . During the lockout of the 2004/05 NHL season , he played for the Czech clubs Vsetínská hokejová and HC Nový Jicín and the Finnish club HPK Hämeenlinna .

The Czech returned to the Blue Jackets for the 2005/06 season . In mid-April 2006, the team announced that Klesla's contract had been prematurely extended by four years. On September 23, 2006, Klesla was suspended for two games by the Chicago Blackhawks after a body check in a preparation game against Tuomo Ruutu . Ruutu injured his knee so badly that he could only play 15 games in the 2005/06 season. After David Výborný left Columbus in the summer of 2008, Klesla was the last remaining player to be on the team when the Blue Jackets entered the NHL in 2000. On February 28, 2011 - shortly before the trade deadline - the Blue Jackets and Dane Byers exchanged him for Scottie Upshall and Sami Lepistö from the Phoenix Coyotes .

The defender spent two and a half years with the Coyotes before he was put on the Waiver by the Coyotes in November 2013 and then transferred to their AHL farm team, the Portland Pirates .

On March 4, 2014 - again before the trade deadline - Klesla was given to the Washington Capitals in a barter that brought Martin Erat to Phoenix . However, they transferred him to the Buffalo Sabers the next day together with Michal Neuvirth in exchange for Jaroslav Halák and a third-round vote in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft . This finally ordered him to their AHL farm team Rochester Americans . However, Klesla decided - without having played a game for Rochester - to return to Europe immediately and against a commitment with the Sabers. In June 2014 he was signed by HC Oceláři Třinec , for whom he had already been active during the lockout in 2012, and reached the Czech runner-up with this in April 2015. After another season at Třinec, in which he acted as team captain, Klesla ended his active career in the summer of 2016 at the age of 34.
