Scott Upshall (born October 7, 1983 in Fort McMurray , Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player who played 813 games for the Nashville Predators , Philadelphia Flyers , Phoenix Coyotes , Columbus Blue Jackets , Florida between 2000 and 2018 Panthers and St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League on the left winger position . At club level, Upshall celebrated by winning the Calder Cupof the American Hockey League in 2004 in the service of the Milwaukee Admirals his greatest career success, while he won the silver medal in the jersey of the Canadian national team at the 2009 World Cup .
Career
The 1.83 m tall right winger began his career in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the McMurray Oil Barons and the Kamloops Blazers in the Western Hockey League , before finishing sixth overall in the first round of the Nashville Predators in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft was selected from the National Hockey League .
Since the Blazers had said goodbye to the WHL play-offs early on , the left-handed shooter completed his first NHL game for the Predators against the San Jose Sharks on April 27, 2003 - during the 2002/03 season . During his entire time in Nashville, Upshall was also repeatedly used by the Predators' farm team , the Milwaukee Admirals , in the American Hockey League . With the Admirals, he won the Calder Cup , the championship of the AHL in 2004 , although he had missed large parts of the season due to a knee injury. After the Nashville Predators were eliminated very early in the 2005/06 season from the NHL playoffs, he reached the Calder Cup final again with the Admirals, but this time they failed with two to four games at the Hershey Bears .
In the following season Upshall started as a player in the Predators' regular squad, but a groin injury threw him back very early, so that after his recovery he was only on the ice for the Admirals. On February 15, 2007, the Canadian was transferred to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Peter Forsberg from Sweden, along with Ryan Parent and one first-round and one third-round option in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft . He scored his first goal for the Flyers on his debut against the New York Rangers on February 17, the second followed two days later in the game against the Boston Bruins . The striker stayed in Philadelphia for two years and was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for Daniel Carcillo as part of the trade deadline in March 2009 with a second-round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft .
The Canadian also played in the service of the Coyotes for almost exactly two years, as he was transferred to the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 28, 2011 - again shortly before the trade deadline - together with Sami Lepistö against Rostislav Klesla and Dane Byers . There he fulfilled his contract, which expired in the summer. On July 1, 2011, the free agent was signed by the Florida Panthers and played there for the next four years. After his contract was not renewed after the 2014/15 season , he joined the St. Louis Blues on a trial basis (professional tryout contract) in September 2015 . After preparing for the season, the Canadian signed a fixed one-year contract there, which was extended for another year the following summer. In September 2017 he ended up with the Vancouver Canucks via a new trial contract , but was again signed by St. Louis at the end of September. At the end of the 2017/18 season, his contract was again not renewed.
After being without a club in the 2018/19 season, Upshall signed a provisional contract with HC Ambrì-Piotta in the Swiss National League in November 2019 . This was not renewed after the turn of the year, before the Canadian announced the official end of his active career in February 2020.
International
Scottie Upshall played for both the Canadian U18 and U20 national teams, with the latter winning silver medals at the 2002 and 2003 World Championships . In addition, he represented his home country at the 2009 World Cup , where he also won the silver medal.
