Before the 2005/06 season, the Blue Jackets brought him into their farm team Syracuse Crunch , but was appointed to the NHL roster of the Blue Jackets after just a few games. There he played until the end of the season and was particularly successful with six of nine turned shootout penalties . The following season he was used in both the NHL and the AHL . In December 2006 Balaštík was committed by the Swedish first division club HV 71 Jönköping , where he met his compatriot Jan Hrdina , with whom he had already played in the Blue Jackets in the NHL.

Before the 2007/08 season, he returned to his home club in the Czech Republic, which has since been renamed RI Okna Zlín . For the 2011/12 season he was loaned to Zlín's league rivals BK Mladá Boleslav and held the captaincy there. Then he returned to HC Zlín. In 2014 he won the Czech championship with the club and was loaned to the Bílí Tygři Liberec during the 2014/15 season. He ended his career in August 2015.
