The Villa Olmo in Via Cantoni is located in Como , in the Lombardy region , Italy.

history

The villa was built by order of the Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi from 1782 to 1797 in the classical style. Construction began under the Swiss master builder Innocenzo Regazzoni from Balerna and was completed by master builder Simone Cantoni, who also came from Ticino, with the assistance of Domenico , Carlo Luca and Giuseppe Pozzi and the sculptor Francesco Carabelli.

The name Villa Olmo is derived from a hundred-year-old elm ( ital. Olmo ) that stood here. After Innocenzo Odescalchi's death in 1824, the villa came into the possession of the Raimondi family. The villa was home to numerous famous personalities, including Napoleon and Metternich . Marshal Radetzky also stayed here, because Giorgio Raimondi had to flee to Ticino in 1848 because he supported the revolt of Como against the Habsburgs. In 1859 he returned and invited Giuseppe Garibaldi to Villa Olmo, who married Raimondi's daughter Giuseppina here.

Raimondi's heirs sold the villa to Duke Guido Visconti Modrone in 1883, who undertook major renovations under the master builder Emilio Alemagna. The side stables were torn down and the entrance area of the villa was converted into a large hall by breaking off the ceiling. A small theater was built and the garden behind the villa was transformed into an English park.

In 1924 the villa was bought by the Como municipality. On the centenary of Alessandro Volta's death in 1927, an international exhibition was set up in the villa. It has been the seat of the “Centro Volta” since 1982 and is also used for numerous exhibitions, congresses and events.
