Jarkko Varvio (born April 28, 1972 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League from 1989 to 2005, among others .

Career

Jarkko Varvio began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Ilves Tampere , for whose professional team he was active in the SM-liiga from 1989 to 1991 and with whom he was runner-up in 1990. The winger then joined Ilves' league rivals HPK Hämeenlinna . With his new club he was also runner-up in 1993. In the 1992 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected in the second round as the 24th player in total by the Minnesota North Stars , but initially stayed with HPK for another year. In the 1993/94 season he finally made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Dallas Stars , the successor team to the Minnesota North Stars relocated in the summer of 1993. In his rookie year , he scored two goals in eight games and made three assists. The Finnish international spent most of the season with Dallas' farm team from the International Hockey League , the Kalamazoo Wings . The 1994/95 season , which was shortened due to a lockout , began in Finland at his ex-club HPK Hämeenlinna and ended with the Stars in the NHL and the Kalamazoo Wings in the IHL.

From 1995 to 1998 Varvio was under contract in the SM-liiga with Lukko Rauma and Tappara Tampere after he had not made his breakthrough in the NHL . He then spent the 1998/99 season in the Swedish Elitserien at HV 71 Jönköping and AIK Solna . He started the 1999/2000 season in the Swiss National League A at SC Rapperswil-Jona and finished it again at AIK Solna in the Elitserien. In the following season he won the Finnish championship title for the first time with the TPS Turku . From 2001 to 2004, the right-shooter played for REV Bremerhaven , with whom he was relegated to the third-class ice hockey league in the 2002/03 season. Following the 2004/05 season , which he had spent in the major league at EV Ravensburg , he ended his career at the age of 33.

International

For Finland , Varvio took part in the junior European championship in 1990, as well as the junior world championships in 1991 and 1992 . In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1992 , 1993 and 1997 World Championships .

He was particularly convincing in 1992. First he was the top scorer at the Junior World Championship with seven goals.
