Pavel Kubina (born April 15, 1977 in Čeladná , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Czech ice hockey player who played 1021 games for the Tampa Bay Lightning , Toronto Maple Leafs , Atlanta Thrashers and Philadelphia Flyers in the course of his active career between 1993 and 2013 National Hockey League has contested on the position of defender . Kubina won - in addition to the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004 - between 1999 and 2005 a total of three gold medals with the Czech national team at the World Cup .
Career
Kubina already played for HC Vítkovice during his junior years , where he started his professional career in 1994 at the age of 17. In the 1996 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning from the National Hockey League in the seventh round as 179th player.
For the 1996/97 season , the defender moved to North America and initially played in the junior division with the Moose Jaw Warriors in the Western Hockey League . As the best defensive player there, he was at the beginning of the 1997/98 season in Tampa's expanded NHL squad and played ten games there in his rookie season . Mostly he was still used in the American Hockey League with the Adirondack Red Wings . From the 1998/99 game year , which he started with a few games in the International Hockey League with the Cleveland Lumberjacks , he made his breakthrough in the NHL.
In the NHL, he was now one of the fixed sizes. He was respected in the league both as a robust player on the defensive and as an offensive defender. In the 2003/04 season he had a large share of the first Stanley Cup victory of the Lightning with 17 goals . His good performance was rewarded with participation in the 2004 NHL All-Star Game . When the NHL went on strike, Kubina played again in Vítkovice for his home club. After his contract expired in the summer of 2006, he signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs . After a foul in preparation he missed the start of the first season in Toronto. Also in Toronto he established himself as a valuable player on the blue line of the Leafs.
On July 1, 2009, Kubina and Tim Stapleton moved from Toronto to the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Garnet Exelby and Colin Stuart . Kubina also played a key role in the team's defense in Atlanta and ended the season as the second best defender on the team. In early July 2010 it was announced that the Tampa Bay Lightning Kubina had re-signed. On February 18, 2012, the Bolts transferred him to the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Jonathon Kalinski , a performance-related second-round suffrage in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and a fourth-round suffrage in the same draft . There he ended the season, but initially did not find a new employer for the following year. In February 2013, Kubina was signed by Genève-Servette HC from the Swiss National League A until the end of the season, before he announced his retirement from professional sport in December - again without a club - at the age of 36.

Kubina represented his home country the Czech Republic at the Under-20 World Youth Championship in 1996 , the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1999 , 2001 , 2002 and 2005 and the Olympic Winter Games in 2002 in Salt Lake City , 2006 in Torino and 2010 in Vancouver .
