Garnet Exelby (born August 16, 1981 in Ste. Anne , Manitoba ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who, after many years in the NHL and AHL, was briefly active in 2014 for the Austrian club Dornbirner EC .
Career
Garnet Exelby was selected during the 1999 NHL Entry Draft as the 217th player in the eighth round of the Atlanta Thrashers . Initially, however, the defender stayed with his team from the Western Hockey League , the Saskatoon Blades . He also played the following two seasons in the WHL for the Blades and the league competitor Regina Pats .
During the 2001/02 season Exelby played for the first time in professional ice hockey. For the Thrashers' farm team , the Chicago Wolves , he scored seven points in 75 games in the American Hockey League , including three goals, and won the Calder Cup at the end of the season . The following year Exelby played for the first time in the National Hockey League and came in his first season on 15 NHL appearances. He spent most of his time with the Wolves again.
From the 2003/04 season , the Canadian was used exclusively for the Atlanta Thrashers in the NHL. Only once, in the 2006/07 season , Exelby and his team could qualify for the playoffs. On July 1, 2009, the Thrashers transferred the Canadian along with Colin Stuart to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Pavel Kubina and the rights to Tim Stapleton . In the 2009/10 season he was in 51 games for the Maple Leafs in action, scored one goal and collected four points.
In September 2010 he had a try-out with the New York Rangers , but Exelby was not offered a contract. On October 8, he signed a contract with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL, where he was the captain in 77 league games on the ice.
On July 5, 2011, Exelby agreed on a contract for one year with the Detroit Red Wings , which used the defender in the farm team at the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League, where he also acted as team captain. In July 2012, he signed a one-year contract with the Boston Bruins , but did not come to any NHL missions here either and spent the entire 2012/13 season as assistant captain with the Providence Bruins farm team in the AHL. On September 25, 2013, the Anaheim Ducks announced that they would sign Garet Exelby and the Danish Frederik Andersen for their farm team, the Norfolk Admirals with play in the AHL. There he scored 18 scorer points (all assists) in 72 league appearances as team captain.
The Canadian finally moved to Europe for the first time in the summer of 2014, where he was accepted into the EBEL at Dornbirn EC . In a game between Dornbirn and Znojmo on November 2, 2014, seconds before the end of the game, there was a case of excessive hardship, due to which Exelby was banned from the DOPS for three games. After he was no longer in the Vorarlberg squad since the National Break, his contract was terminated on December 1, 2014, whereupon the Canadian left the country. For the Dornbirner EC he had played 17 games up to this point, in which he could not record a single scorer point, but clearly led the penalty statistics with 82 minutes.
