Career

Spofforth is a specialist in the 100 and 200 meter back distance. In 2004 at the European Short Course Championships in Vienna , she won her first medal in international championships by reaching third place over 200 meters back.

At the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing in 2008 she was only four hundredths behind the American Margaret Hoelzer and thus the bronze medal over 100 meters back . Furthermore, as the overall rookie, she only narrowly failed in the decision about 200 meters back in the final.

The swimming world championships in Rome in 2009 represent her career highlight so far. There she surprisingly won gold over the 100 meters back in a world record time of 00: 58.12 minutes. At the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010 , she came second three times.
