Rebecca Adlington , OBE (born February 17, 1989 in Mansfield , United Kingdom ) is a former British freestyle swimmer .
At the Short Course World Championships in Manchester in 2008 , Adlington was world champion in the 800 m freestyle with a new European record time. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , she won gold medals in the 400 m freestyle and 800 m freestyle.
In 2009 she received the Laureus World Sports Award in the “ Breakthrough of the Year ” category . At the Swimming World Championships in Rome in 2009 , Rebecca Adlington won two bronze medals, with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay in a new European record and over 400 m freestyle.
In 2010 Adlington won four medals at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi : Gold in the 400m and 800m freestyle and bronze in the 200m freestyle and with the 4 × 200m freestyle relay.
In February 2013, Adlington announced its retirement from professional swimming.
In November and December 2013, Adlington participated in the thirteenth season of the British reality show I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! part where she was voted sixth.
