Michelle Ford

Michelle Jan Ford (born July 15, 1962 in Sydney ) is a former Australian swimmer .

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow she was Olympic champion in the 800 m freestyle and won the bronze medal in the 200 m butterfly . This made her the only Olympic champion in swimming at these games who did not come from the Eastern Bloc . In 1983 she went to the United States to study, and so missed the qualification for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles because the Australian Swimming Federation changed the rules for the qualification. She then ended her career in frustration. In 1994 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
