Alena Popchanka ( Belarusian Алена Попчанка , Russian Алёна Попчанка / Aljona Poptschanka, scientific transliteration Alëna Popčanka ; born  July 28, 1979 in Homel ) is a Belarusian swimmer until 2005 and then a French swimmer .

Until 2002 she trained in Minsk. She then emigrated to France and initially stayed in the French city of Melun for a year , until she stayed in Clichy from 2003 and trained with Frédéricjoyoux . Since November 2005 she has been swimming for her new home in France.

In 2003, at the World Swimming Championships in Barcelona , she surprisingly became world champion in the 200 meter freestyle.

When she won the title in the 200 meter freestyle at the European Short Course Championships in Helsinki in 2006 , she set a new European record in 01: 54.25 minutes in this location .

Popchanka participated in both the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , 2000 in Sydney , 2004 in Athens and 2008 in Beijing . In 2008 she set a new European record in the run-up to the French 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay in 07: 50.37 minutes .
