The Elbe swimming pool is a communal indoor swimming pool in the old town of Magdeburg . It is primarily used for swimming and is geared towards its needs.
history
The swimming pool was built between 1959 and 1962 by the architect Roland Korn and was one of the largest in the GDR . She was training center of the GDR competitive sport and venue of several national competitions. For example, the GDR swimming championships in 1980 , 1984 and 1989 were held in it.
Over time, the hall became more in need of renovation, so that it had to be temporarily closed in 1997 for security reasons. From 2001 to 2004 the hall was completely renovated, modernized and equipped for the disabled for over 15 million euros. The hall is the central training facility of a federal swimming pool. In it, for example, the swimmers of the SC Magdeburg and the water polo players of the Wasserball-Union Magdeburg train and organize their competitions. For example, games of the German Water Polo League and international water polo games took place. It has a 50x20 m pool with eight lanes, which meets the requirements of the DSV for national and international competitions. Thanks to a mobile timing system, times that have been swum in the hall are recognized worldwide (e.g. world and European records). At the pool there is a 1 m diving board and a diving tower with jumping heights of 3 m, 5 m, 7.5 m and 10 m. Since the renovation, the grandstand offers space for 800 spectators. In addition to the large pool, there is a warm water pool with an area of 95 m². This is where water aerobics take place, and in competitions it is used for swimming in and out. Furthermore, a flow channel , a relaxation pool, an athletics hall, a gym and a weight room are housed in the Elbe swimming pool. There is also a dry sauna , a steam bath , a bio sauna and a diving pool.
