Life and works

The Magnus jump

Osterried studied at the Academy in Munich, where he was enrolled in 1827 with the subject "History Painting". Paintings by his hand adorned the Steinach Church, among other things ; His painting with the Magnuss jump is in the Heimathaus Pfronten .

In 1841 the cemetery chapel in Pfronten-Berg was built according to plans by Franz Osterried. The altar, also originally designed by Osterried based on designs by Konrad Eberhard , was later replaced by a neo-Gothic piece; the ceiling painting depicting the Last Judgment , often attributed to Alois Keller , also comes from Franz Osterried , according to Ludwig Aurbacher . The former Catholic cemetery chapel is now used as a Protestant church. It is considered an architectural monument .

Around the same time as the paintings for this chapel, Osterried created twelve paintings of the apostles on canvas and frescoes for the church in Hinterstein .

Around the middle of the 19th century Osterried painted 14 stations of the cross and a number of panels for the high altar and the side altars of the St. Margareta church in Heimenkirch . According to an invoice dated September 14, 1851, he was paid a discount of 300 guilders for a side altar sheet and the Stations of the Cross . However, the pictures in Heimenkirch were not valued for long in the 19th century: City chaplain Franz Xaver Hoegel had the stations of the cross painted over with newer images in 1899 against the mayor's opposition. Later the taste changed; The representations favored by Hoegel were felt to be kitsch and less valuable and the restorer Lutz from Leutkirch had Osterried's Stations of the Cross uncovered and restored. Osterried's depictions of the apostles remained hidden under later apostle depictions by Maximilian Bentele .

The sketches for the painting of the St. Pankratius chapel in Sulzschneid belong to Osterried's latest works . After Osterried's death, the paintings were completed by Karl Keller in 1864 . The ceiling paintings in the choir and the nave show the martyrdom of St. Pankratius and the delivery of the scapular to Simon Stock . The hollows of the choir are decorated with busts of the doctors of the church Gregorius, Ambrosius, Augustine and Hieronymus, those of the nave with representations of the apostles.
